Well, this will be my last blog post unless I get some sort of urge to do this again. Please contact me on the contact form and tell me how you liked this. I learned how to design a building and a few way to build it to withstand nature, I hoped you learned something so please contact me.
I'm just going to put the link to the website because they can explain it better then I ever will so here it is. It will show you how buildings are built to withstand tornadoes. It is by Popular Mechanics magazine so it is reliable. I really like the site, it was informational and like I said before I couldn't write it has good has them.
A few days ago I interviewed a local expert named Jerry Kaiser who owns JK Construction. I asked him about how you go about designing a building and if you click on the interviews tab in the top left hand corner.
Buildings are basically designed to support a vertical load in order to support the walls, roof and all the stuff inside to keep them standing. Earthquakes present a lateral, or sideways, load to the building structure that is a bit more complicated to account for. One way to make a simple structure more resistant to these lateral forces is to tie the walls, floor, roof, and foundations into a rigid box that holds together when shaken by a quake.
The most dangerous building construction, from an earthquake point of view, is unreinforced brick or concrete block. Generally, this type of construction has walls that are made of bricks stacked on top of each other and held together with mortar. The roof is laid across the top. The weight of the roof is carried straight down through the wall to the foundation. When this type of construction is subject to a lateral force from an earthquake the walls tip over or crumble and the roof falls in like a house of cards. Here is the website link that I used. My dad has been a carpenter for most of his life and he always took me to help him on his jo bs. He is the nicest person ever. He taught me everything I know, but the ways of the job is changing and new rules are being implemented. new ways of building and design have changed. now you have to make a house with suspension to be earthquake resistant. They use more treated wood which is prone to rot and fire resistant. They are putting hurricane ties in the trusses so there are less likely to blow off in a tornado or hurricane. There are new designs out there and I'm going to try to explore those new ways.
I'm going to talk about how buildings are made and how an architecture designs a building. I'll show you how to design something and how to get an idea. I might add in a little something here and there in an extras page, I might also tie something into how buildings are made. I hope that you will like what I do and please give me ideas has well.
